Ep. 420: Being Alive with Sapna Gopalakrishnan
/On this episode, Ashdin is joined by his dear friend and fellow trekker - Sapna Gopalakrishnan. Sapna is the kind of person you want around when going through a crisis. She is extremely headstrong and courageous and it's a joy to hear her thoughts on this episode. Sapna and Ashdin talk about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro together, being aware of each other's 'loo schedules', how that is a very intimate and binding thing, and then get into more serious stuff. They discuss Sapna being admitted into the hospital and finding out that she had septicaemia or septic shock - which happens when bacteria enter your bloodstream and starts shutting down organs, having her vocal chords shut during her hospital stay to avoid using more energy, her experience of being admitted to the hospital, hallucinating while being on prescribed drugs, being told that she had been in the hospital for two and half weeks but having no recall of that, how gangrene can set it during septicaemia, and lots more. They also talk about how it Sapna's own voice singing to her that woke her up, what she felt after waking up, how her muscles had atrofied after being in a coma for two weeks, all the various basic things that she need help with like eating, using the washroom, changing clothes, etc, how she had to be retaught how to chew her food after waking up, undergoing amputation surgeries, taking things step-by-step one at a time, having a positive attitude, and tons more. Tune in for a very brave and important conversation.
