Ep. 145: How Hawk-Eye works

SimblifiedEpisode145.png

HOWZAAAAAAAT! Sorry, we had to catch your attention. In this episode, the Simblified guys look at the fascinating technology that is Hawkeye, how it works and how it's used in other sports (including, for some reason, golf, which, for some reason, thinks it's a sport). Anyway, this shortie episode also tells you some fascinating trivia like when the first time it was used was, and how much it costs.

Ep. 144: A lookback at the Cricket World Cup - Part 2

SimblifiedEpisode144.png

In this episode, Srikeit and Chuck look back at the history of the Cricket World Cup from 1996 to 2019: Highlights, takeaways and funny moments from each of these tournaments. Yes, even 2007, which noone remembers. They are joined by Tony Sebastian (twitter.com/notytony) who is guesting on this episode to fill in for Naren. We hope you enjoy this show and get a little nostalgic, even as you're recovering over the greatest ODI ever.

Ep. 143: Different Strokes - Variants of cricket you might not have heard of

SimblifiedEpisode143.png

Cricket was introduced by the colonising British all over the world. In many places, the game was absorbed by local communities and transformed into something different. In this episode, your Simblified hosts look at two such variants which emphasize social bonding and pretty much lose the competitive angles.

Ep. 142: A lookback at the Cricket World Cup - Part 1

SimblifiedEpisode142.png

True hipsters that we are, we've decided to do a series of cricket shows AFTER the CWC19 is over. Some might call us late, but we say there's benefit in being late (like in Lara's batting technique, for instance). Anyway, the Simblified gang look through the World Cup editions 1975 to 1992, each of which were different, a microcosm of the changing times around them. From the quiet, polite, sparse crowds of England 1975 to raucous middle-class noise of Subcontinent 1987. From the low-scoring matches of old to pinch-hitting techniques. We look at it all and make some bad jokes along the way.

Ep. 77: (Rebroadcasting): The Tea Totaller: Ajit Bhaskar tells us all about being a 'Tea scientist'

SimblifiedEpisode77RB.png

What happens when three Pun lovers who run a podcast meet their spiritual Punning guru? That's right, a conversation on how to make tea. Ajit Bhaskar, whose puns on Twitter (@ajit_bhaskar) resulted in him being honoured with a unit (the worst Simblified pun is only. 6 Ajits), and whose incredible cooking skills have made many drool over at Instagram (@macroajit), is actually a Ph.D. who now is a food scientist. He joins the Simblified crew for a fascinating chat on what happens behind the scenes of your favourite tea brew.

Ep. 141: Ever Wonder how we predict the weather?

SimblifiedEpisode141.png

So, yeah, the weather in Mumbai isn't all that great (or is full of romance, petrichor, and other nonsense, if you don't need to travel by public transport). Anyway - we frequently criticize the MET for getting the weather wrong. But they get it right most of the time, and it's pretty darn difficult to ask given that literally anything in the world could change the weather. It was a meteorologist who coined the phrase 'butterfly effect', after all. Chuck and Srikeit look at how the weather is predicted and look back at some ways our ancestors used to do so.

SimblifiedEpisode139.png

This is part 2 of our chat with Utsav Mamoria, on travel. Make sure you check out Part 1 here - https://ivm.today/SIMB-137

Chuck and Naren talk to Utsav Mamoria, who makes his third appearance (!) on the show. The last time, he spoke about how he was preparing for a 3-month sabbatical (Episode 85) - this time, he's back and is ready to share his experiences, stories and most importantly - tips for those who want to travel on a budget. A desi budget. Utsav finished an enviable itinerary at a cost you won't believe. He is hard at work on his travel book, as well - make sure you check it out later in the year. We talk about budgeting for flights, stay, food, sightseeing and more. This is less 'Simblification' and more 'chat with a person very passionate about travel'. He also slips in some beautiful stories, and evangelizes slow travel, as opposed to trying to check off as many items as possible in a day.

Ep. 133: Black holes & why they're so darn important

SimblifiedEpisode133.png

You've probably seen THAT photograph. So, why are black holes so important? Why's this fuzzy little picture of some distant faraway thingummy sending scientists and all those smart people into a frenzy? Well, it's complicated, but thankfully the Simblified gang have watched several Youtube videos and attempt to explain it to you with some signature "humour". We look at how some Hydrogen atoms in outer space get really horny, get it on, form stars, which eventually implode and form black holes. These utterly fascinating things - which confounded even Einstein & Hawking - hold a lot of secrets to our universe. Join us and get enough fodder to make your next water cooler conversations awesome - you'll be saying things like "Heh, my appraisal was like an Event Horizon!" in no time. Ep. 132: The science in Avengers: Endgame

SimblifiedEpisode132.png

WARNING: Moderate spoilers in this episode! Ideally best listened after (or during) watching the movie.

So, Endgame. There's a ton of characters, emotion and history in there. And, like all superhero movies, there's a fair bit of liberty taken on the factual or scientific part of things, which doesn't mean we can't deep dive! In particular, the Thanos snap in Infinity War that wiped out half of all life (oops, spoiler for that movie - but if you haven't seen that by now, you probably don't care). What implications would that actually have? Can we make do without half of all humans, trees, cows and (shudder) podcast hosts? Join the trio as they find out.

Ep. 131: Artist Management & setting up music properties with Romario

SimblifiedEpisode131.png

Ever been to a music gig and wondered how it all came together? Look at the artists on stage - how did they get there? Do they just ring up the venue? Do the venues call them? Do bands have an "HR"? What does being an artist involve? Just play in your bedroom, upload on YouTube, become famous, play at gigs and have fans at your feet?

Well - sort of, but there's a lot in between. To unravel that, we have Romario Rodrigues joining Chuck & Naren in the studio as we aim to 'simblify' artist management. Romario has set up a company called Kranti Art Theory that has recently turned one year old, and works with some promising music and visual artists in India. They had a lovely chat about what the whole thing involves, and how (get this!) his company celebrated its first year in business by throwing a party on a boat!

Check out Kranti Art Theory on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/soundsofkranti) & Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/soundsofkranti/) - they have some fun gigs coming up every now and then, and work with some very cool artists.

Shenoy, who - shock, horror, has never been on said platform. So Chuck and IVM Podcasts producer Abbas Momin (filling in for an absconding Srikeit) try to tell him what he's been missing out on. Ep. 128: How does the internet travel around the world?

SimblifiedEpisode128.png

In our last episode, we looked at the differences between the internet and the WWW. In this episode, we take things a step further by figuring out how exactly Facebook & Google, located in California - comes here to India. The answer, it turns out, is through a series of really long underwater cables, each of which is thinner than your hair (really!). The Simblified trio tell you all you need to know about how the internet whizzes around the world, in this shortie. Enjoy!

Ep. 124: Can someone explain this GDPR thing?

SimblifiedEpisode124.png

Recently, you might have heard of something called the GDPR. It has something to do with the Russians, right?

Well, no. Well, not entirely, anyway. The GDPR is a massive law that protects Europeans' data from companies that would like to peddle off the fact that you have a predeliction of ordering ice-cream at 2 AM (heh) to some company for a quick buck. And Google's been very evil and is being fined 50 million Euros. So the Simblified trio (duo actually, Naren wasn't there) have a look at the law and its ramifications.

By the way, Simblified is not GDPR compliant so you can't unsubscribe (ok you can, but please don't).

Ep. 123: The Union close to being Jacked

SimblifiedEpisode123.png

On this episode of Simblified, Chuck and Srikeit (Naren was missing, presumably fulfilling his duties as Malad's Batman), check on the progress of Brexit - Britain's hilariously botched attempt of trying to leave the European Union. With just about a month left to the exit deadline and with no deal to gracefully exit anywhere on the horizon, we discuss the potential options for how Brexit may pan out. Almost all options involve Britain comically shooting themselves in the foot so join in for some gyaan and a lot of post-colonial schadenfreude.

Ep. 122: Do we really need civics? Ft. Meghnad & Shreyas from "How to Citizen"

SimblifiedEpisode122.png

Yes, back in school, Civics was like the token black guy of social studies. Who had time to learn about elected officials while deciduous trees and various dates were waiting to be mugged up!

But as we grow older, wiser and more responsible, we find ourselves using the things we were supposed to study in 7th standard more and more useful (no, trigonometry, not you). Meghnad and Shreyas, hosts of a new podcast called "How to Citizen" tell us about this and how we can become better citizens (or at least, better informed while trolling people on Twitter). This is an eye-opening episode and honestly, we could have gone on yammering for another few hours on the topic - but you can hear M&S do that in their show (link below). We also talk about the problems of social studies pedagogy, and go through several of our own experiences and biases. Super chat it was and we hope you enjoy it as well.
